I went to TTAC, logged in, and commented on an article. My question now is, did I go to far with my response and reasoning? In the article, Jack Baruth writes about the Texas Edition badge from a truck (presumably a Silverado). In the article (while unpacking the package with the badges) he says this:

Ladies (yeah, right) and gentlemen,......

I called him on it in the comments as being discriminatory towards women buyers and women in general. Feel free to peruse the comments section to see the rebuttals to my comment. A particularly interesting one is from Bark M. He states that my reading comprehension has failed and that Baruth meant that they have no female readers based on their statistics. That’s fine, but that’s not how it was stated.

In this community (cars and car enthusiasts) I feel we need to welcome and embrace our female counterparts as much as possible. I also feel like with comments like his, he is potentially alienating any chance of getting a female audience.

Take a look if you have a moment and read what I wrote. I am user kthooker. If I am wrong, I will freely admit it. Looking for guidance.

We are pretty inclusive on Oppo. The author is just pandering to his readership. That being said, I agree with you.

It’s always better to leave the door slightly ajar than to have it closed outright.

Don’t comment at TTAC.

Look at the comments for any ten posts there on any day. You’ll see that the comment sections are centered around the same eight to ten people every time.

Every. Single. Time.

I usually do that method as well...up until the point where someone starts attacking me or is clearly someone who won’t be willing to have a real “conversation”, then eventually I just say “fuck it” and stop being so nice.

For example, if I make a mention of a certain website that has a four letter abbreviation anywhere on Kinja, burners come out of the woodwork being absolutely vile.

These idiots at TTAC don’t know why they have a small female readership...maybe it’s because the car community is generally unwelcoming to women? Because 95% of the time, when you see a woman involved with cars, she’s usually supposed to be the eye candy...not like you know, an actual car enthusiast. lol

I read it as a joke they had few female readers, not that they weren’t welcome. Your comment comes off as possibly being hypersensitive to perceived sexism, when the author was just pointing out the male bias in their readers.

If he had said something like “Ladies (you don’t care) and gentlemen” I would perceive that to demean the female readers.
